Birding in the Counties on Rt 422
Just north of Pittsburgh, discover some beautiful new places to bird watch, all linked by Route 422. Start wherever you wish and simply head east or west on Route 422 to visit the other locations.
Butler County is accessible by I-79, I-80 and the PA Turnpike. You'll discover gorgeous green space and plenty of quirky treasures. You might spot osprey, bald eagles or a cerulean warbler. We recommend staying at the Fairfield Inn or Locust Brook Lodge, just off of Route 422; or a scenic campground is always nearby!
Armstrong County, accessible by Routes 28 and 66, offers endless outdoor recreation activities and a wealth of waterways and trails to explore. Don't miss the Canfield-Holmes Wildlife Sanctuary & Cowanshannock Trail. Settle in for the night at the Quality Inn in Kittanning or Paganelli's Butterfly House.
Indiana County can be reached by Routes 22, 119 or 286. The foothills of the Allegheny Mountains create natural outdoor beauty and house more than 275 species of birds and many unique attractions. Spend the night in an Indiana hotel or one of the lovely B&Bs in Dilltown, Cherry Tree or Blairsville.
