Get Out
While we can’t wait for you to visit Butler County, we want you to get out once you’re here. That’s because we have so many outdoor experiences that we can’t wait for you to try.
Be sure to spend time at Moraine State Park, the third largest state park in the commonwealth. Stop by the Heritage School and play extreme croquet. Participate in an educational class at Moraine or Jennings Environmental Education Center. Other not-to-miss outdoor spots include the Butler-Freeport Trail, the North County Trail, Todd Nature Reserve and the State Game Lands.
Come out and play at Alameda Park. Savor the early morning sun on the park’s trails and playgrounds. Let the kids run free and do what they do best! Beat the heat in the pool (open throughout the summer) or just jump around in the stream. The Rotary Playground is designed for kids with special needs, so all of our young visitors and residents have a safe place for fun.
Freebies
- In July and August, Butler County Parks & Recreation features a summer concert series and programs at Alameda Park. Spend a fun-filled day in the park to learn something at a free program or unwind to some free music.
Insiders Tips
- The best places to birdwatch at Moraine State Park are the South Shore, the Sunken Garden Trail, McDanels Launch, Lake Side/Point Picnic Area and the Waterfowl Observation Deck at the Old 422 launch area.
- Moraine State Park has about two dozen geocach sites within its borders! If your idea of the great outdoors is hunting, visit Four Seasons Game Bird Farm. They have 450 acres of diverse terrain for you to enjoy quality pheasant and chukar hunting. No license is required.
- Be sure to check out the Itineraries section of this site for an outdoor itinerary, and many other fun ideas!
- The rare Cerulean Warbler is known to make its home south of the Monroe Road trailhead along the Butler-Freeport Trail. A wonderful site for birding is the nearby Todd Nature Reserve.
Hands On
- At Jennings Environmental Education Center, participate in an environmental program, investigate the only protected prairie in Pennsylvania, or search for wildlife among one of more than a dozen trails. You could hike along the North County Trail, which runs through Jennings or can also be picked up behind the Old Stone House.
- Every year over Labor Day weekend, the Butler Outdoor Club sponsors its Outdoor Extravaganza. The weekend includes various activities, such as biking, boating, caving, rock climbing, horseback riding and hiking, giving you an opportunity to try something new. Camping and meals are optional, and there is entertainment each night.
