Ready to try something new? Explore Jennings Environmental Education Center by snowshoe or ski. It’s easy, fun, and it’s free! Beginning January 2nd, on every Saturday with a minimum of 4 inches of snow on the ground, a limited number of snowshoes and trekking skis will be available for use at the Jennings Center. To ensure conditions are suitable, call the center at 724-794-6011 before 4:00 pm on the Friday prior to a snowy Saturday. Snowshoes and skis will be available on a first come/first served basis. A valid driver’s license or identification card must be provided in order to borrow snowshoes or skis. Brief instruction will be provided at the time of loan.

To the Native Americans and early settlers, snowshoes were the only practical way to travel through deep snow. Many of the snowshoes they used were modeled after the feet of animals well adapted for winter travel. Although no longer necessary for modern winter travel, snowshoeing remains a popular way to explore a snow-covered forest. It is also a great way to keep fit during the long Pennsylvania winter.

Jennings is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays and on weekends as scheduled. The trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset for hiking and other environmentally related activities. If you need an accommodation to participate in park activities due to a disability, please contact the Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks: 888-PA-PARKS (voice), 717-558-2710 (local or international voice), 711 (AT&T Relay Services). With at least three days notice, interpreters for people who are deaf or hard of hearing are available for educational programs.
