Overview
This free event on Saturday, October 12 at the South Butler Community Library introduces girls in grades 8 -12 to opportunities available for jobs in manufacturing and the steel industry. Breakfast will be provided to both girls and their parents at 8:30am. Motivational speaker and author of "Women in Steel, Women of Steel" Karin Lund will inspire girls to embrace careers that provide good paying jobs, career advancement, and challenging opportunities. Local women welders and engineers will host a panel discussion about their jobs with ample time for girls to ask their questions.
At 10:00am the families will join a celebration of Saxonburg's historic Woman of Steel, Emily Roebling, who guided the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge after her husband Washington, the bridge project's chief engineer, became ill. Molly Nowakowski will portray Emily Roebling's victory ride across the completed Brooklyn Bridge with her rooster in hand in a horse-drawn carriage and describe Emily's role in completing the Brooklyn Bridge. A tribute of plaques and photos to the Roeblings of the Brooklyn Bridge project - John the designer, Washington the Chief Engineer, and Emily the skilled woman ahead of her time - will be made to the library in memory of Marlene Docherty, the founder of CID Associates.
